What’s the Difference Between Red and White Wine (other than the colour)?

The type of grape used in the production of wine has a significant impact on the appearance and flavour of the final product. It’s where most of the difference between wines comes from as well, with red wine coming from pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon grapes while white wine comes from chardonnay and pinot grigio.

Going beyond what grape producers use during the winemaking process, there’s the matter of what parts of the grape to ferment. Generally, red wines are fermented with the grape’s seeds and skins, while white wines are not.

Of course, their contrasting production methods produce vastly different flavour experiences. White wines have a subtler taste with fruity hints, while red wines are smoother and more velvety going down.

Popular Italian Red Wine Types

There’s no shame in starting with the more popular options and branching out from there if you’re new to wine. These are red wines that most people enjoy, so trying them out yourself is an excellent way to determine if their flavour agrees with your palate.

Sangiovese

Sangiovese red wines are the most common types because the Sangiovese grapes grow in vineyards all over Italy. It’s the key ingredient in Chianti wines, producing a somewhat sour, earthy taste. However, that flavour tends to vary significantly depending on the climate in which the grape was grown.

Montepulciano

Montepulciano grapes are native to central Italy. They’re the second most planted grape in the country, but the limited locations where they can be grown curb their notoriety. This grape promotes bolder flavours in the wines they’re used in due to the high acidity. Therefore, producers will usually lessen this tartness by mixing in gentler grape varieties.

Negroamaro

The Negroamaro grape is produced solely in Puglia, and winemakers have used it in Puglian wines for over 1,500 years. It’s famous for the sweet-tasting notes of strawberry and raspberry present in the final product. However, Nergomaro produces a dryer sweetness than its counterpart Primitivo so you’ll usually find the two mixed in the winemaking process.
